William Shakespeare was married in Temple Grafton church in the year 1582 to one Ann Whateley. The name is thought to be a misspelling of Hathaway.
The Parish of Temple Grafton is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as being owned by a man named Gilbert - it covered an area of some 600 acres with a population of around 80. The parish was valued at around £4.00.
The longest ownership of the manor was by the Sheldon family who held it from 1548 to 1675. Grafton Court now stands on this site and some of the stained glass windows depict scenes from Shakespeare’s plays and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
